Rams, Carriker agree to 5-year deal

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Rams’ first-round draft pick Adam Carriker was expected to be on the practice
field Friday, hours after agreeing to a five-year contract.

Terms were not disclosed. Rams spokesman Rick Smith said the deal was
reached early Friday, before the first workout of training camp.

Carriker played defensive end at Nebraska, where he was the Big 12 defensive
lineman of the year as a senior, leading the Cornhuskers with seven sacks. He
is expected to move to defensive tackle for the Rams, who have struggled in
recent years at that position.

Bulger signs lucrative 6-year extension

Friday, July 27th, 2007

There will be no training-camp holdout for Marc Bulger — and he’s got at least
26 million guaranteed reasons why.

Bulger, who reported for the first full day of Rams training camp after missing
a team meeting Thursday, became one of the NFL’s highest-paid quarterbacks
today when he signed a six-year contract extension today that on average will
pay him just more than $10 million per season.

Guaranteed money in the extension is $26 million.
As Bulger practiced with the team today, his agent, Tom Condon, met this
morning with Rams executives to complete the deal.
Bulger was a no-show at a mandatory team meeting Thursday, and faced the
possibility of being fined $14,000 for each day of training camp he missed.
First-round draft pick Adam Carriker also will be on the practice field — some
time today.

Zygmunt: Bulger is our top priority

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Marc Bulger’s agent, Tom Condon, spent most of Tuesday morning in a negotiating
session here with Jay Zygmunt, the Rams’ president of football
operations-general manager.

It was the latest in a series of meetings aimed at a contract extension for
Bulger, the Rams’ Pro Bowl quarterback. Before Tuesday’s session, the parties
had met at the NFL owners meetings in March in Phoenix, last month in St. Louis
and two weeks ago in Los Angeles.

Zygmunt rarely comments on continuing negotiations. When asked about an
extension for Bulger on Tuesday, his only reply was: “I just want to reaffirm
that it’s our No. 1 priority right now. That’s really what it is.”

Zygmunt declined to divulge any details of the team’s contract proposal, but it
is believed that the Rams have offered Bulger a contract that would place him
among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league and make him the highest-paid
player in Rams franchise history.

Condon did not return phone messages Tuesday from the Post-Dispatch.

Rams agree to terms with second-round draft pick

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Rams agreed to terms Tuesday on a four-year contract with running back Brian Leonard, their second-round draft pick.

Leonard is expected to compete for the backup spot behind Steven Jackson. He was the feature back at Rutgers before his senior season, when he moved to fullback and helped Ray Rice rush for 1,749 yards.

Leonard made 45 starts in 47 games at Rutgers and holds the Big East record with at least one catch in every game. He amassed a school-record 5,961 all-purpose yards, holds school career records for receptions (207) and points (272), and helped Rutgers win its first bowl game as a senior with a victory over Kansas State in the Texas Bowl.

Only first-round pick Adam Carriker, a defensive end from Nebraska, remained unsigned with training camp beginning Friday.

Rams: Turnover and turnaround?

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Jim Haslett heard the skeptics’ chortle after the Rams added prominent weapons
to an offense that already was one of the NFL’s most potent units:

It’s a good thing, because with that defense, they’re going to have to score 40
points a game to win.

Haslett, the Rams’ second-year defensive coordinator, responded with a smile
and a shrug. “I hope we do score 40 points a game,” he said. “It makes my job a
lot easier.”

Haslett’s job was daunting from the outset. He arrived after the team’s 6-10
nosedive in 2005. The Rams wound up 30th in total defense — 28th vs. the run
and 23rd vs. the pass — and gave up more points than all but two of the NFL’s
32 squads.

Haslett stays put and off the coaching carousel

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Seven new head coaches will assemble their NFL teams for training camp this
week. To the surprise of many observers, none of them is named Jim Haslett.

The immediate question that arose last year after Scott Linehan hired Haslett
as his defensive coordinator was, how long will Haslett be here? He had spent
the previous six seasons running the New Orleans Saints, and skeptics figured
that he would jump at the first chance to nab another head-coaching position.
