Holt carrying no baggage to Pro Bowl

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

Unlike last year, when he was facing offseason knee surgery, wide receiver
Torry Holt is planning on attending, and playing in, the Pro Bowl. Holt
probably will be the Rams’ lone representative in the NFL’s all-star game,
which is scheduled for Feb. 10 in Honolulu.

“I feel a lot better at this point this year than what I did last year,” Holt
said. “I definitely want to go over and show my appreciation by being there and
playing.”

Holt, who has earned a Pro Bowl trip after seven of his nine seasons, isn’t
planning to lug any extra baggage with him, though. To that end, he sought
Friday to jettison any aftereffects lingering from his Dec. 20 sideline blowup
with coach Scott Linehan, which was caught live by NFL Network cameras and
replayed many times by various local and national outlets.

Holt says Rams players support Linehan

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

You wouldn’t always know it by the reaction of the team’s star players, but
Pro Bowl receiver Torry Holt believes Rams coach Scott Linehan has the
confidence of his players.

Holt is among those caught on film this season in apparent sideline
disagreement with the second-year coach. The normally upbeat receiver was seen
screaming at Linehan toward the end of a loss to Pittsburgh on Dec. 20. Earlier
this season, running back Steven Jackson apologized after a sideline tantrum.
And quarterback Marc Bulger was seen rolling his eyes after speaking with
Linehan.

Holt’s endorsement on Friday was hardly overwhelming.

Linehan mum on Bruce’s future with Rams

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

By Bill Coats

After being shut out Dec. 9 at Cincinnati, wide receiver Isaac Bruce has put together two strong games. He picked up 72 yards on four catches Sunday vs. the Packers, then tacked on 87 yards on seven receptions Thursday vs. the Steelers.

Bruce, who is in his 14th season (all with the Rams), is rapidly ascending the NFL’s career lists. He now stands No. 3 in receiving yards (14,070), is tied with Art Monk for No. 6 in catches (940) and, after scoring on a 12-yard pass Thursday, is in a five-way tie for 13th in touchdown receptions (84).

This season, Bruce has caught 53 passes for 694 yards and four touchdowns. Still, he’s 35 and is due to receive $5 million in 2008, including a $2 million bonus if he’s on the Rams roster when the league season begins in early March.

AC’s bottom line: NFL Predictions, Week 17

Thursday, December 27th, 2007 Every Friday during the 2007 NFL regular season, RealFootball365.com senior writer Anthony Carroll brings you his weekly "bottom line" predictions. This is the final edition of the 2007 campaign.

Week 16 Power Rankings: Concern in Green Bay?

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007 Green Bay no longer has the look of a true Super Bowl contender

Steelers should tee off on Smith-led Ravens

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007 Pittsburgh will likely face Baltimore Ravens rookie quarterback Troy Smith in the second start of his career this Sunday. The Steelers have precedent for passers in their second career starts under center.

Week 15 Power Rankings: Dallas drops

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007 Dallas Cowboys (LW: 2; 12-2) - Terrell Owens has five catches and no touchdowns over the last two weeks, and he's beginning to get a tad ornery. Uh-oh.

Consistent Rams turn in another bad performance

Monday, December 17th, 2007

It was (bad) business as usual for the Rams Sunday at the Edward Jones Dome.

Scott Linehan devised a safety-first offensive game plan featuring bulldozing
back Steven Jackson. The Rams sustained two impressive first-half scoring
drives and trailed the Green Bay Packers by just three points at the half.

Jim Haslett’s defensive unit did some good things, with Brandon Chillar forcing
a fumble (which Adam Carriker recovered) and O.J. Atogwe picking off two
passes. Even rookie cornerback Jonathan Wade broke up a couple of passes, which
was unusual for him.

But . . .

As usual, the Rams found ways to fail. Their kicking game was awful. They
consistently gave the Packers short fields.

They were prone to penalties, getting flagged 13 times for 93 yards. Jeff
Wilkins chunked another field goal attempt.

Bulger is relieved that he can put ‘head issue’ to rest

Monday, December 17th, 2007

Quarterbacks rarely ask to get knocked down. But the Rams’ Marc Bulger, who had
missed two games after suffering a concussion, was eager to find out how he
would withstand the contact.

“I was hoping to get the first hit out of the way,” he said. He didn’t have to
wait long: On the second play of the Rams’ first series Sunday, Green Bay
linebacker Nick Barnett burst through for a sack.

“I felt fine,” Bulger reported.

Even after a solid blow to the head later, Bulger was unfazed.

“I’m not sure if it was a knee or a fist or what got me,” he said. “I was
worried for a second or two, but it went away. So, I’m back to 100 percent.”

Bruce moves into fourth on NFL career receiving list

Monday, December 17th, 2007

What if you reached a major career milestone and (almost) nobody noticed?

Late in the second quarter, Rams wide receiver Isaac Bruce used a nifty
downfield fake to gain separation on Green Bay cornerback Charles Woodson. The
result was a 37-yard gain down the right sideline that got St. Louis out of a
second-and-9 hole.

The 2-minute warning came one play later, so there was plenty of time for fans
at the Edward Jones Dome to be notified that Bruce, with that catch, had moved
past Marvin Harrison into fourth place on the NFL’s career list for receiving
yards.

AC’s bottom line: NFL Predictions, Week 15

Friday, December 14th, 2007 Every Friday during the 2007 NFL regular season, RealFootball365.com senior writer Anthony Carroll brings you his weekly "bottom line" predictions. This week's picks don't include Thursday night's matchup between the Denver Broncos and Houston Texans.

Rams’ Bulger could return from concussion

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007 The St. Louis Rams fully expect to be led by quarterback Marc Bulger this Sunday against Green Bay. Bulger took all the reps with the team's starters in Wednesday's practice, indicating that he's back from the concussion he suffered in Week 12.

Week 14 Power Rankings: Colts quietly keep rolling

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007 Indianapolis Colts (LW: 3; 11-2) - The Colts handle their business every week, yet it seems nobody really notices. For a team that is still defending its Super Bowl title, these guys don't get nearly enough respect. In all probability, though, they like it that way.

Next foe is the focus for Linehan

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

Rams coach Scott Linehan said he has worried about winning games — not his job
security — as the 2007 season has progressed.

“I haven’t really thought about my job status much more than the questions I’ve
been asked,” Linehan said Monday. “Certainly, it comes with the territory when
you haven’t had a winning season. But my focus has been, as always, the next
opponent. Last week, it was Cincinnati; this week it’s Green Bay.”

Nonetheless, it’s nice to know that he has a vote of confidence from team
President John Shaw, who told the Post-Dispatch late last week that he expects
Linehan back next season.
