The Seahawks were punished for violating offseason rules once before, in 2014.
So when they were caught again, the league dropped the hammer on them. The NFL just announced the Seahawks violated offseason rules prohibiting excessive contact in offseason workings, citing a June 6 OTA practice.
The team was fined $400,000, and will lose a week of OTAs next season, along with their 2017 fifth-round pick. Coach Pete Carroll will also be fined $200,000, and the team will have to pay players for the OTAs which are cancelled next year.
The league cited a portion of the CBA which prohibits live contact.
” Voluntary off-season workout programs are intended to provide training, teaching and physical conditioning for players,” it reads. “The intensity and tempo of drills should be at a level conducive to learning, with player safety as the highest priority, and not at a level where one player is in a physical contest with another player.”
The decision came after the league and the NFLPA reviewed their practice video.
In 2014, Carroll was fined “at least” $100,000, the Seahawks were fined “more than $200,000,” and the team lost two minicamp days in 2015 for having impermissible contact at offseason workouts.
