Rams 2008 Draft
March 26th, 2008 | by Kevin Morris |With the resigning of James Hall the other day it opens some interesting questions about what the Rams plan to do with the 2nd pick in the NFL draft. They have a few options:
- Stay put and draft and draft Vernon Gholston DE from Ohio State.
- Stay put and draft Jake Long OT from Michigan.
- Stay put and take whoever they feel is the best player on the board.
- Trade down and pick up roster depth.
Gohlston and Long both present interesting dilemas for the Rams now because even though they are great players they do not meet a glaring need for the team. They have a serviceable player in those positions already on the roster, Alex Barron and Orlando Pace at the tackles and James Hall and Little on the defensive line.
The NFL however is won or lost in trenches as the Rams were the glaring examples of last year. When injuries on the o-line and d-line took out starters, the team could not function and never performed to their potential.
The running game was hampered all season by the Pace injury as lineman after lineman were shifted around due to injuries. Scott Linehann never was able to showcase the power running game he had hoped to bring to the team. That’s why I think Jake Long may be an interesting choice at #2, if he can come in and earn a roster spot, move Alex Barron inside (no more false starts), get Pace healthy and on the field, that is the nucleolus of a great offensive line.
So what do you think? O-line, D-Line, Trade Down, Best Available.
